azrael / Ubuntu

(azrael is a Sony VAIO VGN-T140P laptop.)

original install was Ubuntu 7.04 (FF); upgraded to 8.04 LTS (HH).

things that worked out of the box:

  • wireless
  • X.org
  • battery monitor

widescreen resolution

to get the widescreen to work, installed the package 855resolution

sound

to get sound to work, had to toggle the switch “external amplifier” in the mixer. this was complicated by the fact that i had to first turn on the view of that switch.

(from Volume Control: Edit→Preferences→Check “External Amplifier”. then go to the “Switches” tab and turn it OFF. viola, sound!)

bluetooth

found the package spicctrl, which appears to be able to toggle the bluetooth device. though it claims it can also adjust LCD brightness, what you get instead is the brightness of the power button LED. sigh.

  • to disable bluetooth: spicctrl -l 0
  • to enable bluetooth: spicctrl -l 255

things which do not work:

  • LCD brightness adjustment fixed in Hardy Heron!
  • external volume keys / other function keys

things which have not been tested:

  • bluetooth
  • external display (projector)
  • dvd playback
